Bio-inspired MEMS transducers, and their fabrication methods and applications

Bio-inspired engineering systems have played an important role in human development history.  In recent years, our research group has developed bio-inspired micro/nano transducer systems, enabling advanced functionalities.  In this talk, two research topics will be discussed, before linked together:

1.Bio-inspired smart surfaces induced droplet microfluidics, for Lab-on-Chip applications

2.Bio-inspired soft functional materials microengineering for mechano-responsive sensing and actuation on super-flexible substrates



Dr. Yifan Li (MIET, MIEEE, FHEA) was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University (Newcastle, UK) in 2014, having been a Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh (UK) where he also gained PhD in 2007. This followed his BEng obtained from the School of E&E Eng. at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003.


Dr. Li is an academic member of the Smart Materials and Surfaces Lab (SMSL) at Northumbria. SMSL is internationally recognized for its high-quality research outputs (e.g. Nat. Mater/Photon/Comm, Adv. Mater., Adv. Func. Mater., Phys. Rev. Lett.), supported by UK government (currently 7 EPSRC projects ~£2.2M), and other Research Councils (e.g. Royal Soc., EU, Dstl) as well as International companies.  As the manager of the Flexible Sensors and Actuators Testing Lab within SMSL, Dr. Li’s key research interests are droplet microfluidics, soft material microfabrication (e.g. printing, soft-lithography), flexible electronics and transducers with recent outputs in prestige journals e.g. Adv. Func. Mater. (cover paper), Sen. Act. B: Chemical, Prog. Mater. Sci., etc. 


李轶凡博士(MIET,MIEEE, FHEA, 高级讲师, 博导),上海交通大学测控技术与仪器系工学学士(99-03),爱丁堡大学微纳米科学博士(03-07)/博士后(07-14),英国纽卡斯尔诺森比亚大学高级讲师(14至今),智能材料与表面课题组 (SMSL) 成员,柔性微纳米器件测试实验室负责人。作为主要研究员先后参与欧盟和英国工程科学基金百万英镑/欧元级项目5项,基于专利(US2013252847)成立的公司Dynamic Bioarray曾获得Converge Challenge银奖。主要科研方向:智能亲疏水表面引发液滴微流体控制,柔性材料微纳米器件制备,可穿戴/植入柔性电子与传感技术,生物医学化学传感器片上实验室,近期科研成果发表Adv. Func. Mater. (封面论文), Sen. and Act. B: Chemical, Progress Mater. Sci., 多份国际顶级期刊
