Both [100]L(A)×[011]T(P) and [110]L(A)×[001]T(P) transverse-mode PZN-(5-7)%PT single crystals, where superscripts (A) and (P) denote the active and poling direction respectively, exhibit much superior dielectric and piezoelectric properties to those of state-of-the-art PZT ceramics. They have been successfully utilized to design and fabricate a range of new-generation piezoelectric devices for demanding applications, notably compact low-frequency broadband underwater projectors suitable for UUV platform and accelerometers of ultra-high sensitivity and dynamic range. This presentation describes the properties of these useful crystal cuts and the measured performance of the said piezoelectric devices made from them.
